Understanding IELTS Writing Band Scores

The IELTS Writing test is scored on four equally weighted criteria: Task Response, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy. Each criterion is scored from 0 to 9 in half-band increments.

What each band score means

  • Band 9: Expert user — complete command of the language
  • Band 8: Very good user — occasional inaccuracies
  • Band 7: Good user — handles complex language well
  • Band 6: Competent user — generally effective command
  • Band 5: Modest user — partial command with errors

Most universities require a minimum of Band 6.5 or 7.0 for admission. Immigration programs like Canada Express Entry typically require Band 7.0 or higher.
