Coherence & Cohesion

IELTS Coherence and Cohesion: How to Move from Band 6 to Band 7

Coherence and Cohesion measure how logically your ideas are organized and how naturally your sentences and paragraphs connect.

What examiners focus on

Whether the essay is easy to follow from introduction to conclusion
How clearly paragraphs are organized around one central idea
Whether linking devices are used naturally instead of mechanically

Quick diagnosis

If this is your weakest criterion, the fastest win is usually not more vocabulary or longer essays. It is tighter control of the exact behavior this band descriptor rewards.

Read the Band 6 profile below, compare it against your last draft, and fix one item from the checklist in your next attempt.

Band 6 profile

The overall structure is understandable, but transitions can feel repetitive or forced
Some paragraphs contain more than one main idea or develop unevenly
Linking words are present, though they may be overused or awkward

Band 7 profile

Ideas move in a clear, logical order with well-controlled paragraphing
Each paragraph develops one purpose and supports the overall argument
Cohesive devices, reference words, and repetition control feel natural

Common mistakes

Starting too many sentences with the same linker such as However or Moreover
Combining unrelated ideas in one paragraph
Writing a conclusion that introduces a new argument

Improvement checklist

Give every body paragraph a single main idea before you start writing
Use topic sentences to signal the purpose of each paragraph
Replace half of your linking words with clearer sentence structure or reference words
