Sample Essay (Band 6.5)

257 words

Working from home has become very popular in recent years, especially after the pandemic. Some people think employers should allow their workers to do their jobs from home. I mostly agree with this idea because it has many benefits. First, working from home saves time and money for employees. They do not need to spend hours travelling to the office every day. They can also save money on transport and buying lunch. This extra time can be used for family or exercise, which makes employees happier and healthier. Second, working from home can increase productivity. Many workers say they can concentrate better at home because there are fewer distractions from colleagues. They can also work in a comfortable environment and take breaks when they need to. Companies like Twitter and Facebook have allowed remote work and found that productivity did not decrease. However, there are some problems with remote work. Some jobs cannot be done from home, like factory work or healthcare. Also, some employees may feel lonely without colleagues around them. It can be difficult to separate work and personal life when working at home. In my opinion, employers should offer flexible arrangements. Workers who want to work from home should be allowed to do so, but they should also have the option to come to the office sometimes. This balance can give employees the best of both worlds. In conclusion, working from home has many benefits for both employers and employees. Although it is not suitable for all jobs, companies should try to offer this option when possible.

Band 8+ Essay294 words

The question of whether employers should facilitate remote working arrangements has acquired renewed significance following the widespread adoption of home-based work during the COVID-19 pandemic. Having weighed the evidence, I am largely persuaded that offering remote work options benefits both organisations and their workforce, though implementation requires thoughtful consideration of occupational requirements and individual circumstances. The advantages of remote work for employees are substantial and multifaceted. The elimination of commuting time—averaging 54 minutes daily for London workers—represents a significant improvement in quality of life, enabling time reallocation toward family responsibilities, physical exercise, or professional development. Furthermore, studies by Stanford University demonstrate that remote workers exhibit 13% higher productivity compared to office-based counterparts, attributable to fewer interruptions and greater autonomy over working conditions. From an organisational perspective, remote work offers compelling benefits. Companies can access talent pools unconstrained by geographical proximity, while reducing expenditure on commercial real estate. Environmental considerations are also pertinent; decreased commuting translates directly into reduced carbon emissions and traffic congestion—externalities that impose significant costs on society. Nevertheless, remote work presents genuine challenges that merit acknowledgement. Certain roles requiring physical presence—healthcare, manufacturing, hospitality—cannot feasibly be performed remotely. Moreover, research indicates that prolonged isolation can diminish collaboration, impede knowledge transfer, and contribute to employee disengagement. The blurring of boundaries between professional and domestic spheres may also exacerbate stress for some individuals. The optimal approach, therefore, involves hybrid arrangements that balance flexibility with meaningful in-person interaction. Employers should assess role requirements systematically, provide necessary technological infrastructure, and implement policies that protect employee wellbeing while maintaining organisational cohesion. In conclusion, remote work represents a valuable option that employers should generally support, while recognising that universal application is neither feasible nor desirable. Strategic implementation that accommodates diverse needs will yield the greatest benefits for all stakeholders.
